The Process of Rearing Young Cattle

The process of rearing young cattle involves several age-related stages, each with specific rearing technologies based on the biological characteristics of animal development. These technologies help unlock their genetic potential. The first months of a calf’s life are the most critical, as this is when production losses related to disease and mortality often occur, due to the intensive development of the digestive organs. The first six months of life are also marked by constant changes in diet composition, making it essential to choose a simple and universal feeding system with high efficiency.

Feeding calves in the first three months of life is one of the most important factors affecting their growth, development, and future productivity. The diet must be balanced, providing all necessary nutrients and supporting the formation of a healthy digestive system. Proper feeding during this period determines the calf’s ability for rapid growth and development of muscle and immune systems, which influences the future productivity of bulls.

When planning calf feeding, it’s important to consider life stages:

      1. Newborn calves (0–14 days): The most beneficial feed is colostrum, which should be given within the first few hours after birth, no later than two hours, at a volume of 10–12% of the calf’s body weight. Colostrum contains a high concentration of antibodies essential for immunity development. Whole milk – after the colostrum phase, calves should receive 6–8 liters of milk per day, divided into 2–3 feedings. It provides easily digestible proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Water should be introduced from day 3–5, as it is crucial for digestion and nutrient absorption. Water must always be clean and warm.
      2. Transitional period (15–30 days): Begin gradually introducing milk replacer (MR), which contains essential vitamins and minerals. From day 10, special pelleted starter feed (with 18–20% crude protein) can be introduced at 50–100 g per day. Starter feed provides essential nutrients for rapid development of the digestive system. To promote rumen development, offer quality meadow or legume hay from day 20. Alongside hay, BMVD (protein-mineral-vitamin supplements) and premixes can be added to support muscle development and strengthen the immune system.
      3. Main period (1–3 months): Gradually reduce the volume of milk, transitioning to grain-based feeds, starter feed, and hay. Increase starter feed intake to 2.5 kg per day. It is crucial that the feed contains an optimal amount of protein, vitamins, and minerals. BMVD and premixes – added to the diet of calves and young bulls – promote the formation of a strong skeletal and immune system. Premixes provide the body with essential trace elements, improving feed utilization. Water must be constantly available, as it plays a vital role in digestion and nutrient absorption.

It is important to control feed quality and use only high-quality products, as spoiled or moldy feed can disrupt digestion and reduce weight gain. Feeding hygiene must be maintained by regularly cleaning feeders and drinkers to prevent the spread of infections. Feed should be provided at consistent times to improve digestion efficiency in calves.

VITAGRO NUTRITION offers highly effective feeding programs for calves from birth to 6 months of age. Our programs are developed with consideration of the physiological capabilities of the newborn calf’s digestive system and its rapid growth. These feeding programs enable farmers to achieve average daily live weight gains of 500–800 g.

      Results of Proper Feeding:

      • Strong immunity and healthy development of calves and young bulls.
      • Optimal body weight gain (700–900 g per day).
      • Formation of a robust digestive system and healthy rumen.
      • Preparation for efficient further fattening.

Following this feeding program ensures good health, rapid growth, and future productivity of calves and bulls. It is crucial to adhere to proper feeding technologies, use high-quality compound feeds, BMVD, premixes, and other supplements to ensure maximum nutrient absorption and effective development of young cattle.
